The total number of
species of birds known to occur in the Atlin area (from literature, diaries,
etc.) now approaches 200. Some species encountered during the spring migration
period are noteworthy:
Arctic Loon
the first nest and eggs in British Columbia were discovered in the Atlin
area in the summer of 1980 by Wayne Campbell. There are now 4 breeding
records in the province.
Barrow's
Goldeneye
usually a cavity-nester but in the summer of 1980 this species was found
nesting in the open on a clump of mistletoe in a spruce tree at a local
lake.
Oldsquaw
a rare bird in inland lakes has been seen on Atlin Lake.
White-Winged
Scooter
a rare nesting species in B.C. but found nesting in small numbers on a local
lake.
Osprey
the most northern breeding record for B.C. comes from Atlin Lake.
Gyrfalcon
prized by birdwatchers, breeds
in cliffs in the Atlin area.
Herring Gull
the most northern colony in
B.C. is on Atlin Lake.
Arctic Tern
Atlin Lake is at the eastern
edge of its breeding range in B.C.
